Nine years ago today,
my buddy Julie lost her courageous fight with cancer.
Today, I lost another friend to cancer.
Ashley was one of my 2002 UCLA student teachers
at El Sereno Elementary School.
She was the one that told me about Alexander Science Center School.
She and I were founding teachers there.
She taught there for a year.
I taught there for 12.
She said "YES," when I asked her to try Student-Led Conferences with me.
15 years later, I am still doing Student-Led Conferences.
She was the one that gave Daniel his first leather baseball glove.
We had both hoped it would take. It hasn't.
I didn't have a baby shower when I adopted Daniel.
But I did get a handmade quilt in my favorite color for him.
She invited me to join something called FaceBook in 2007.
This was my first profile picture.
She loved Dodgers baseball.
She loved Clayton Kershaw before anyone knew who he was.
She loved education, but not incompetence.
She was a National Board Certified Teacher.
She loved Hello Kitty.
She loved Coach.
The apple keychain she gifted me years ago is still on my ring.
She was a fighter.
She fought as long as she could.
She was 39.
I will miss her.
Be at peace my friend.
