143/180 RJ Circles

"Restorative Justice (RJ) emphasizes community building and commits to restoring relationships. Restorative practices promote and strengthen positive school culture. Moreover, pro-social relationships also improve within the school community."-LAUSD Bulletin.

Our school district has implemented RJ practices.
We are lucky to have a RJ teacher assigned to our school.
One of the practices we have been trained to use are RJ Circles.
Although there are specific protocols for the circles,
We have modified them for our ETK classroom.

The focus for my very young students this year is to practice speaking, listening, and taking turns.
What I hope to do is create a community where students feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings.

We are STILL working on listening and taking turns...

Initially, we would do RJ circles once a week.
There is a talking piece (a special object) that is passed around.
The person that holds that piece is the only one that can speak.
My team partner and I provided the pieces we used in the beginning,
but now, almost daily, a student will bring in a talking piece to use for circle.

Initially, it went something like this during check ins...
"How are you feeling today?"
-I like chicken nuggets.
-I feel happy because I went to the park.
-I like when my mom buys me stuff.

Today I realized that they can now answer the question and state a reason (evidence) without prompting, and more students are moving beyond just saying what makes them happy, and sharing deeper feelings inside.

"How are you feeling today?"
D: I’m scared because the world is going to end.
N: I’m scared I’m going to die when I get old.
Y: I’m mad because my mom won’t play with me.
B: I’m mad because my mom won’t buy me chicken nuggets.
U: I’m sad because I miss my mom.

Real concerns for 4-5 year olds.
We were able to validate their feelings and friends were able to give hugs and words of support.
I know teachers of older students have had many serious issues come to light in circle.
It can be uncomfortable.
But it is important for our students to know that we are not hear to judge them.
We are here to support them, accept them, and validate who they are and how they feel.

142/180 Spring Awakens... Transitions Begin...

So much to do in the next 38 days.
Transition time begins NOW!
We will still have outdoor centers for 2 hours and uninterrupted play inside as well.
But we also need to begin the transition into kindergarten.
Our strawberry plant survived spring break! Thanks to a caring custodian!
We continue to develop oral language through experiences.
#They will be ready.

I want students to continue to ask questions,
explore their environment, make observations, predict,
 and explain their thinking!
#Theywillbeready!
From now on, we will not eat lunch in our classroom.
Today was the first day our students ate lunch at the benches like all the other classes.
They did a great job and only a few kids asked for help! Yay!
They will be ready!
I've noticed how much better their fine motor skills are now!
So excited for the class as we wait to become parents!
Silkworms are the best for observation and we are patiently waiting for ours to arrive!

TAKE A BREAK....

Spring Break is usually not a total break for teachers.
It's a time to catch up on things that we don't have time for during the school year.
Aside from the car service, doctors appointments, dog grooming, and some spring cleaning...
I did accomplish a few things I am very proud of this week...

Got a manicure/pedicure...
Learned how to replace a broken toilet's ballcock all by myself!
Caught up on my Massage Envy credits!
Took the boys hiking somewhere new!
Went hiking with good friends too!

Took a long lunch catching up with a dear friend

Got to visit with two of our favorite senior friends over a meal!

Took an excited Animaniacs fan to his dream concert!

And the biggest spring break accomplishment:
Organized and reserved 99 tickets,
over 3 dates,
to Hamilton, the Musical for friends & family.
Collected over $13,000 to pay for those tickets.
And now waiting for Wednesday to complete the transaction!

141/180 SPRING FEVER!

Today we walked to the neighborhood park.
After a slight drama with one of the parents,
we made it!
Egg hunt seems to have lasted for 30 seconds!
#experiencematters
READY! SET!

It fascinates me how children think.
J obviously had a plan in mind!
I think everyone did alright!
We have this wonderful parent that will do anything to give the students special memories.
Today she dressed up and played Bunny all day long!

Now on to spring break!

140/180 EGGS ANYONE?

Today we decorated and dyed hard boiled eggs.
I hadn't done this with students for a long time and wasn't sure what to expect.
I was surprised to find that many of my students had never dyed eggs before.
Discoveries and "A-Ha" moments are the best and I got to witness many of those today!
#ETK #discoverieswhiledyingeggs #orallanguagedevelopment #followthechild

I love little hands and making observations on how students grasp their writing tools!
After dying eggs, some of the students wanted to crack them open.
I thought, why not! So we did.
Scientists need to use all their senses, so they did!

The magic of a cup of water with food coloring!

During clean up time, J noticed something happening in one of the cups!
Squishy is a favorite word of ours to use to describe things of late!

After "peeling" the "shell"-new words, and eating the "yolk", we collected the shells and added it to your garden!
Tomorrow we will hide 24 real eggs.
We started with over 60 real eggs today.

139/180 CULMINATION, COMPUTERS, and BUNNIES!

It was Cap and Gown Picture Day... #already?

They get to take the photos again next year in Kindergarten!
So we make observations today...
Using our 5 senses to examine a Peeps bunny!
Wanted to do a bubble map, but after group one
decided to concentrate on oral language instead.

Directed drawing after observations.

J tells me about his picture! He can speak a sentence now and I understand it!

We put those Chromebooks to work today!
